Today’s braces are more discrete than they used to be.

Braces

We’ve all seen the movies and TV shows with that awkward teenager wearing braces, but media doesn’t paint the complete picture. These dental devices don’t just improve the way you look; they also enhance your overall dental health, and they are suitable for people of all ages. At Shapira Family Dentistry, we are proud to offer braces in West Palm Beach, FL!

What are Braces?

Braces are orthodontic devices used to straighten or correct crooked, crowded, or otherwise misaligned teeth or jaws. Although braces in West Palm Beach are traditionally associated with adolescents, anyone wishing to improve the appearance of their smile and overall dental health can take advantage.

What are the Components of Braces?

Dental technology has changed quite a bit in recent years, which means braces have too. Depending on the extent of your treatment, your braces might only have some of the following components. However, generally speaking, braces contain the following parts:

Brackets

Brackets are small metal components that are glued onto the surface of your teeth with a special adhesive. They serve as handles for other components to hold onto and move your teeth. Although traditional brackets are metal, there are clear brackets made from a ceramic material – this option is available for those who wish to make their braces less noticeable.

Bands

Bands are metallic loops that go around your most posterior teeth or molars and are held in place with a block of special dental cement. Bands are made with an attachment used to connect the archwires which move your teeth into place.

Archwire

Archwires run the length of a row of teeth and connect your brackets to the bands. The archwire can be shaped into different shapes and help move your teeth to the desired alignment.

Power and Energy Chain

This chain is made out of rubber rings that are connected to each other. Power and energy chains are used to pull separated teeth closer together, so they are most commonly prescribed in cases in which there are gaps between teeth.

O-Rings

O-rings are small rubber bands that connect the archwire to the brackets. Some modern braces use self-ligating brackets that do not require o-rings.

Elastics

Elastics are simply rubber bands that are attached to different brackets, usually on the top and lower brackets. These are used to expedite treatment or help align the lower jaw to the upper jaw or vice versa.

Separators

Also known as spacers, separators are made of rubber and inserted between molars to create more space before receiving braces. Teeth usually end up very close to each other, and separators help make orthodontic treatment more effective.

Palatal Expander

Palatal expanders are used to extend or grow the upper arch of your teeth. These devices are cemented onto the upper teeth and help correct cross-bites.

Herbst Appliance

Herbst appliances are prescribed when a patient has an underdeveloped lower jaw. These devices are cemented onto the lower molars and help maximize jaw growth.

What are the Benefits of Braces?

Many people think that braces in West Palm Beach only serve a cosmetic purpose. However, crooked or misaligned teeth create tight and uneven spaces that put you at a higher risk of developing dental infections. Braces improve your appearance and oral health at the same time. Other benefits include:

  • Enhanced confidence
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Enjoy smiling again

Are Braces Right for Me?

Braces are an excellent option for people of any age group wishing to improve the appearance of their smile. If you have a dental gap, crowded or crooked teeth, braces might be the ideal solution.
